What the closer does
The final inches of a door’s travel are the hinge’s work: a cam pulls the door in and holds it against the gasket. Worn or broken, it leaves the door short, drifting open or needing a push. Sub-Zero’s checklist for a hard-to-close door names cracks, chips, missing screws, damaged plates and broken cams, and leaves those parts to a service technician.
Adjust it, or replace it?
Sub-Zero says its Designer (formerly Integrated) hinges are not adjustable: alignment is made at the panel. So a door that looks crooked may need only its panel reset. A hinge that is cracked, loose in its mounting or missing its cam is replaced. Classic and older series have their own alignment steps, and we follow your model’s installation guide.
What counts toward the panel weight limit
- Counts: the front panel
- Counts: any backer and spacer panels fastened to it
- Counts: the custom handle
- Does not count: the mounting brackets
Limits are listed in the Sub-Zero design guide, model by model.
A front changed in a remodel gets checked against your model’s limit before new parts go on; otherwise a new hinge inherits the overload.
Cherry Creek kitchens are getting heavier
Renovation never stops here, and new buildings add to it: the Waldorf Astoria Residences at 185 N. Steele St., a five-story building of about 40 units, was due in 2026, and a Four Seasons building of about 41 to 42 residences is proposed for the 200 block of Detroit Street. Re-facing a door is cabinet work; checking the new front against the hinge limit is ours.
What it costs
Hinge work has no standard range: parts and time vary with the model and the way the panel hangs. The $89 visit covers the diagnosis and is credited if you go ahead, with the price agreed first. If the hinge was not the whole story, the gasket page picks up from here.
Hinge questions
Can I change a Sub-Zero hinge myself?
Sub-Zero’s answer is no: its guidance says door hinge replacement should be done by a service technician. The door is heavy, the panel heavier, and a hinge refitted slightly out of line leaves the gasket open at one corner. What you can do safely is clear anything blocking the hinge.
The door drifts open on its own. Is that the hinge?
Sometimes, but check two things first: a unit out of level can pull a door open, and so can a bin, shelf or drawer that is not seated. If the door still drifts after that, the cam inside the hinge is the next suspect, and that is a part we replace.
